The Sure Signal uses your Internet connection to route calls to and from the Vodafone network. If you have a slow or very busy Internet connection, then it is possible that call quality will degrade. Speech may be garbled and/or you will hear robotic-type noises. Vodafone describes this as “the Darlek effect”
Possible diagnostics steps to take:
Run a speed test at www.speedtest.net – you’ll need a connection that can download at at least 1Mbit. Upload should be at least 128Kbit
Test the latency of your connection with www.pingtest.net – all three metrics (ping time, packet loss, and jitter all need to be as low as possible. Check for the ‘Line quality’ section – the MOS score should be as close to 5.0 as possible.
If any metrics don’t match those outlined above, contact or possibly change your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Checked with Vodafone on the upload speed, and the Sure signal will not connect properly (if at all) if upload speed is less than 200kbps
Here’s what I did to fix this. I have a Linksys router, and in the menu pages, accessed through my internet browser, I found the QofS (Quality of Service) settings … in my case it was under the “Applications and Gaming” tab.
After enabling the QofS , I found two sections entitled “Device Priority” and “Ethernet Port Priority”.
The first let me prioritise traffic to two nominated devices (eg. a mobile phone ) over and above any other traffic on the router. Here I needed to enter the MAC addresses of the two phones I picked.
The second let me prioritise traffic through one particular port on the back of the router, again over and above any other traffic on the router. Here, I picked the Port number into which the Ethernet cable from the Sure Signal was plugged.
After saving the settings, I checked the quality of the calls and they were noticeably better.
Good luck!
Hey. @BlueOyster – can you share your Linksys router model? I have this issue and my Netgear DSL router doesnt have QOS. – just wanted to get your model if it works well – thanks
