We’ve scoured the internet and pulled together a list of routers that are known to work with Vodafone’s Sure Signal device. Where the router requires configuration changes to get the Sure Signal to work properly this has been flagged in the ‘Verfied Working’ column with ‘Requires Config’ (clicking this link will take you to the necessary setup instructions).
If you know of a router working or otherwise that isn’t yet on this list then do leave us a comment below with details of the manufacturer, model, firmware version and the name of your ISP and we’ll get it added in.

Cisco 877 works fine with version 12.3(8r)YI4.
Hi! I have problem with vodafone sure signal with belkin F5D8235-4 v2
it was working with same sure signal with same router but suddenly doesn’t work.
been replace the device but @ lamp flashing, no working at all. please anybody let me know what should I do. I been set up router virtual firewall setting as 50,4500,500,123
Cisco RVS4000 works fine – no config required provided UPnP is enabled
Hi
ASUS RT-N16 with Tomato Firmware (http://tomatousb.org) works fine with UPnP enabled.
Works with Draytek Vigor 2130. Had to set UPnP, opened ports 50 TCP, 123 UDP, 500 UDP and 4500 UDP and then enabled IPsec pass-through. Would not work with UPnP alone, nor when the SS was set as DMZ host
My VSS worked perfectly with my BT Home Hub 2 for 11 months, and then just stopped working.
D-Link DSL-2640R verified as working only with config,
the port forwarding needs to be set up, or alternatively the sure signal box can be places in a dmz zone
I couldn’t get my Belkin F5D8636-4 v1 working, the SureSignal didn’t seem to get an IP address, so I plugged in my old DSL-2640R and it worked first time without any configuration changes or port forwarding.
Belkin F5D7632v1.UK.1.00.09 – Just plugged one of these in and my Sure Signal has connected without further config
My Belkin F5D8636-4 v1 simply would not work (it was replaced once by Vodafone), but it did work on my old Belkin F5D7632v1.UK.1.00.09.
However, I plugged the SureSignal back into the Belkin F5D8636-4 v1 it is now working.
Conclusion: Both routers use 192.168.2.1 as the default gateway so I’m assuming by SureSignal was allocated an IP by DHCP on a long lease on my old router which was then honoured by the newer router.
This is the only explanation I can think of.
D-Link DSL-2640R verified as working here too, just use the same ports as with the other instructions. I assigned each device on my LAN a static ip address first. Although this isnt essential it prevents DHCP issuing new addresses when they expire that may render your newly created rules for the SS incorrect.Once you have done this, you identify each device from its mac address in the \connected clients\ list then configure the settings under port forwarding as per the other tutorials. Only difference is that you neednt assign each new rule a name like some others. If anyone needs a tutorial for this router then shout here and ill run through it quickly.
Hi Richard. – I’m experiencing the usual problems as a lot of people with the Sure Signal. I also have the DSL-2640R and am struggling to configure. At moment the modem keeps cycling on and off. Can you explain exactly what settings need to happen within the DSL set-up program. Many thanks
Here is an update about the 2130n. I use this router because it can pass through two VPN tunnels – I can’t see how others who use Sure Signal and another VPN for work could use both at the same time. (or it would be tedious to keep changing settings) Even my set up is not perfect, since I have found that if I set up both tunnels and then for any reason there is a router reboot, then Sure Signal will not connect again unless I go into the router settings and then sequentially set up an IPSEC tunnel dor the Sure Signal and then the PPTP tunnel for work. For this reason I couldn’t recommend the Draytek, but then I don’t know of any other routers that will permit two simultaneous IPsec and PPTP tunnels
Thanks Richard
Ref Netgear DG834 port 500.
I have a netgear DG834 (old but rock solid) and Pipex broadband. It did not allow me to set up port 500- says its already in use by another service. That service was a predefined VPN-IPSEC that I found on the Firewall Rules, Services page, services dropdown -I noticed it was referenced to port 500.
2nd level tech help from VF somehow managed to delete this service for me and reset their end and now SS2 works, asking me to do a hard reset at the same time- it took maybe5 hours to come on line after.
I do recommend contacting VF SS support and allowing them remote access- it took 3 calls over 3 days, but got it sorted.
Had you enabled an IPSEC service previously? It’s unusual for the DG834 to ship with this on by default. Do you know what firmware version you’re running?
Netgear WGR614V9 also works, didn’t have to open any special ports, but it did need a static ip setup in the netgear web interface (under ‘LAN setup’) using the MAC address on the back of the SS (I set the ip to 192.168.1.33) – it didnt pick up DHCP for some reason.
Thanks Rockille, updated with this info.
According to Vodafone, your router needs ports 8, 50, 123, 500, 4500 for Sure Signal to work properly.
My BT Voyager 2100 won’t allow use of these ports and so is incompatible.
http://www.portforward.com has a seemingly full list of routers and what they are, and are not, capable of.
This conclusion took 2 and a half hours of calls to Vodafone and my ISP to establish – (during which time they managed to reset our router and kicked us out of our own connection) – which is a serious lack of product knowledge from VF’s point of view. Their website just states that ALL routers are compatible and clearly this is not the case.
It was the second call centre chap I spoke to at my ISP who figured out why the router wouldn’t work with this device (port forwarding required on above ports or use of DMZ on host). On calling back to VF to ask about DMZ, they had no idea what this meant.
Suggest that vodafone alters their troubleshooting scripts to make this a less painful experience for others!!
Thanks Debbie,
Five! ports needed – I was thinking of changing my phone onto Vodafone but I have enough problems already.
3com Office Connect 3CRWDR101A-75 Yes
Change this to sometimes! I have this router and the SS refused to work for a month. It then started working and worked fine for a few months. It then decided to stop working for a few days and has been up and down every day since then. Nothing changed at my end. My guess is that all the problems are at vodafone’s end, because nothing changes here.
Works fine with Draytek Vigor 2830n
Hi Guys,
I have just started using a BThomehub3 and have not found any specific port forwarding data for this router. So I have used the port forwading numbers listed on the http://www.portforwarding.com site for the BThomehub2. this is 50 123 500 4500
All works fine. But a few hours later the homehub screws up and wont let me connect to the net.
I’ve only been working with this router for 2 days so I’m not sure if the SS port forwarding is affecting the router in some way. Or perhaps this is un related.
My SS box is the Original one. It has been working fin for years, then my router packed up and needed replacing.
Has any one else tried to configure a SS box with a BT Home hub3?
was is sucsessfull?
What settings did you use?
I have a D-Link DSL-2680 V1.08 provided by Talk Talk, my ISP. Can’t get Sure Signal to connect to internet. Don’t have the knowledge to get involved with port forwarding etc. – unless I had step by step instructions.
I bought a Belkin F7D4402v1 based on the information here – it does not work!
TrendNet TEW-658BRM works with the sure signal straight out of the box. No Problems.
Tried to use a netgear wnr200 and a zyxel nbg-419n with Vodafone Sure signal on a FTTC connection. No luck. Tried at two different sites. I have used an expensive Draytek router at one of the sites and it worked fine, so i know sure signal box works, and the iSP (Murphx) works.
Can anyone advise of a home router that works woth sure signal and FTTC. Any help really appreciated.
Thanks
Dave
FTTC is a problem with the Sure Signal because of MTU fragmentation using PPPoE.
The only other option would be to ditch the FTTC modem and replace with this:

I think this should do they job, but it isnt cheap.
Never had any problems with pfSense (www.pfSense.com) running on a variety of x86 hardware.
Linksys WAG54GS works by applying the same Port Range Triggering config as that listed for the Linksys WAG325N. Connected up within 5 mins of me applying the settings.
I’m almost overcome with joy having given up for the last 12 months of steady power light and burying my head in the sand!
I’d previously opened those ports in Single Port and Port Range with no joy.
Great site!
My Belkin F6D4630-4 v1 router with 1.00.02 firmware works perfectly
Just plugged in the sure signal and it worked straight away with no configuration or port forwarding required.
